A Strange New (Academic) Year

Lots of things have changed since our last update. The LagoLab had a Zoom-filled, but productive summer 2020, capped off by successful virtual Botany 2020 presentations! Check out a poster of our talks here (and if you went to Botany, make sure to catch their recordings by the end of July 2021, when they disappear!). (Thanks to Lauren for designing it!)

Herbarium SciComm!

It was a banner week in LagoLab outreach out of the LSU herbarium! We installed a permanent display case and the first of what we hope to be many, many rotating exhibits. LagoLab members took the reigns on their second annual LSUMNS Night at the Museum, Herbarium Edition. They focused on life cycles of plants. Laymon and Janet showed off pollination syndromes, Diego discussed the intricacies of fruits, and Laura gave a stunning talk to wrap all the themes together. Good job, team!

Summer meetings

The LagoLab was busy attending our favorite conferences this summer!

At Evolution 2019 in Providence, RI, Laura L. gave an invited talk in an SSE symposium on Integrating Ecological Interactions into Macroevolution (YouTube link) and former undergraduate Lauren Frankel presented a poster titled, "The promises and pitfalls of herbarium phylogenomics: A case study in a Neotropical plant radiation" (top photo at right).

At Botany 2019 in Tucson, AZ, Laura L. presented a poster on ongoing NSF-funded herbarium integration at LSU, postdoc Laura Frost gave TWO talks (one on her dissertation research on Citharexylum and a second on her current work in Freziera, middle photo at right), incoming graduate student Laymon Ball presented a poster on her undergraduate research into the reproductive biology of Justicia californica, and grad student Janet Mansaray was a mentor in the PLANTS program (the same program in which she was an mentee as an undergraduate!).

Three's Company

A lot has happened since the last update! But most importantly, the Lagomarsino Lab has two new members. Janet Mansaray is finishing the first semester of her PhD at LSU after completing an internship at the Morris Aboretum in Philadelphia. More recently, Laura Frost started in the lab in December as a postdoctoral researcher. She just finished her PhD with Dick Olmstead at University of Washington. We're excited to have more than one other person in the lab!

Fall 2018: The semester with all the travel

Laura had a busy semester of travel! She attended two international conferences, Evolution in Montpellier, France and the Congreso Latinoamericano de Botánica in Quito, Ecuador (where she gave two invited talks and was awarded a Pan-American Scholar Award from the Botanical Society of America), visited the French National Museum of Natural History in Paris, was lucky enough to visit the Oak Springs Foundation in Upperville, VA twice, once a guest lecturer for the eFlower course and again as a BCoN workshop participant, and presented seminars at University of Florida, Mississippi State University, and Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden.

An exciting day for the lab!

Lab set up is chugging along, slowly but surely. The first of our fancy new Rainin pipettes came today, to complement the 26 boxes of tips that came yesterday. The clean-up of our space is nearly complete, and we getting ready to finally settle in. We are thankful to our colleague, Brant Faircloth, for letting us use his lab space so we can go about generating our first round of data while we're still moving in. Stay tuned for before and after photos!
